Callahan--Ok, we are kind of in a holding pattern.  On Tues we will have our report on Disneyification.    On Thursday we will begin discussing global news and wire services.  For Thurs, please read the following article (The Roles of Global News Agencies):

A small part of the conclusion is not available, but it's free (and free is a very good price).

Two main issues are discussed in this chapter.  First, global news is controlled by western organizations.  Second, there is a focus on negative or bizarre news.  What is your response to these two arguments?  Do you think that global news is working under these pressures?  If so, what are the consequences to this system?  If not, what mitigating factors are in play?  I'm looking forward to your responses.

Please post your responses to these two articles by noon on the 14th.  I will be discussing global media conglomeration, so I am interested in your opinions about global news voices.  Is there enough diversity?  What impact does a reduction in media voices have on media output?

January 31 Readings--Callahan

Please read the following research article:

"Beyond the Four Theorie of the Press"

I like this article because not only does it describe the four press theories, but it also looks at how press theory is expressed in a number of countries.  It is a good example of how we can investigate cultural approaches to communications.

In your response, please give your insights into how politics, culture, and media combine to produce a communications product.  Do we find what we expect in these types of studies? What are your responses, insights?  I know this is a bit vague, but I'm interested in your thoughts.
